Media and Press Information (Updated Monday, 4 August 2008)
The final preparations are under way for the Tullamore Show and AIB National Livestock Show, which is taking place this Sunday, 10th August on the beautiful Charleville Estate, Tullamore. Following the major disappointment of the Show’s cancellation last year due to the site flooding, an attendance of 50,000 people are expected to travel from all 32 counties in Ireland and further afield to see and experience what is now firmly established as Irelands Premier Show. It is the showcase for Irish agriculture, farming, food, culture and rural life. The very best in business, technology, innovation and inventions will be on display, together with a full programme of sideshows, music and entertainment. It will be a truly authentic cultural experience.
The organising committee have been overwhelmed by the phenomenal support they received over the past year and have worked hard to put a programme in place for what promises to be a record breaking show. Trade stands are completely booked out and over 550 trade stands, covering almost every aspect of farm, home, food and garden will be on display or demonstrated. Even with the extension of the trade stand areas, a considerable number of applications could not be facilitated.
Competition is going to be very keen for the €160,000 prizefund as entries for all the various categories closed with a 4% increase in numbers, while further entries may be made on show day for the show jumping and home industries sections. The 45 national titles in The AIB National Livestock Show will be decided by a strong panel on international judges. Their task will not be easy as the ‘crème de la crème’ of Irish livestock have been entered in the various sections, featuring all the regular and even the not so regular breeds. Almost 1400 cattle will be vying for the coveted rosettes and titles, with the Salers breed showing a very impressive 84 entries. The commercial cattle section has a record breaking number of 272 entries. The shorthorn entries in the dairy section has surpassed all expectations. Are we witnessing a major comeback of the traditional breeds?
This year, the theme of the show is The Country Living Showcase and the programme will feature the Garda band, Bord Bia promotions, vintage show, wildlife and pets corner, American Sheepdog trials, Bees in a Glass Hive, major equestrian events and 200,000 sq ft of tented village with indoor demonstrations and competitions. The Taoiseach and local Tullamore man, Mr. Brian Cowen has been a tremendous supporter of the Tullamore Show since its revival in 1991 and we are delighted to announce that he will be performing the official opening on Show Day. This is scheduled to take place at 1pm. on the main stand. The Show site is open for exhibitors at 7.30am and spectators from 9am, with our entertainment programme starting at 12pm. We would encourage spectators to arrive as early as possible to see all the wonderful events during the day.
The Show is taking place in the beautiful surroundings of Charleville Estate, located on the Birr Road, Tullamore. There will be a map and traffic plan available for download on the Show website ( www.tullamoreshow.com) and updates will feature on AA traffic watch reports on Show day. Traffic signs will also be visible on each approach route towards the show and local Gardai will be present. The committee would like to wish each exhibitor the best of luck in their respective competitions and hope that it is a safe, enjoyable and activity packed day to be enjoyed by all.

Record number of renewable energy companies to attend the Tullamore Show
The growing interest in renewable energy will be evident at this years Tullamore show with a marked increase in the number of companies attending. The tiger is obviously still roaring in the renewable energy world. When the Tullamore show first recognized the potential that existed for the then fledgling industry four years ago only five companies were present.
This year however we are delighted to showcase over 20 renewable energy companies, representing a broad spectrum of different technologies and opportunities from wood chippers to gasifies to solar panels. It is also good to see so many companies stick with the Tullamore show over those four years. For the homeowner, this section is a must for anyone renovating, building or simply upgrading their heating system, seldom does such an opportunity to see such a wide range of technologies and companies arise.
For the farmer or contractor opportunities to develop your own energy business can be researched, with Teagasc on hand to give advice as well as many private companies promoting woodchippers and energy crop production. We look forward to seeing you at the sustainable living section at this years Tullamore show.

See the Forestry Village at Tullamore Show 2008
Come and visit the Forestry Village at the Tullamore Show on Sunday 10th August.
Teagasc (Forestry Development Unit?) and the Forest Service invite you all to visit the Forestry Village at this year’s Tullamore Show which will showcase Ireland’s exciting and rapidly expanding farm forestry sector with information, products, services and demonstrations.
This year the Forestry Village will include the Renewable Energy Section to give you the opportunity to create your own Sustainable Living Environment using sustainable forests to generate renewable energy using green boiler technology.
The Forestry section will comprise an indoor Forestry Information Marquee, an outdoor trade area and a “live” forestry Demonstration area. In the demonstration area there will be regular live demonstrations of timber harvesting and processing machinery.
An important theme of this years forestry section will be the promotion of the Afforestation and the new FEPS planting schemes. FEPS is targeted to encourage planting by REPS farmers and those planning to join REPS. All farmers and landowners that are considering forestry will find comprehensive practical and financial advice available from Teagasc, Forest Service and other forestry organisations.
Another important theme of the Forestry section will be the promotion of the thinning of plantations and the harvesting options that are available for both conifer and broadleaf crops. Many plantations that were planted in the early to mid nineties are now approaching thinning and now it is important to research the importance of thinning and what harvesting options are available.
The Renewable Energy section will provide an ideal opportunity to see what’s new in wood energy. The recent announcement that biomass gasification boilers are to be included in Phase III of the Greener Homes Scheme will be of great interest to all woodland owners and people interested in cutting and burning their own firewood.
With all aspects of the forest industry covered by trade stands in the Forestry Village at the Tullamore Show 2008, this is an opportunity not to be missed to avail of free, comprehensive and up to date information on forestry and wood energy – our growing sustainable natural resource.
Looking forward to meeting you

Show jumping in both horse and pony codes have always been greatly supported over the years and for this year’s show, we in the horse section are in no doubt that we have the best range of competitions tailored for every rider. For horses the €1,000 Winner Takes All class has become our flagship event while in the pony category we have provided 8 classes from newcomer level up ABC standard.
2008 sees the Tullamore Show Society introduce a new entry system where exhibitors in all events, including show jumping, will be allowed credits against their entry fees at the time of making their entry. We have now provided an additional entry form page in our Show Schedule for competitors who wish to partake in our Show jumping classes. Entries for all of the Show jumping competitions will of course be accepted on the day where credit voucher(s) received after payment at the gate can be used at the entries tent. Entries valued @ €20 – deduct €15 credit from the entry fee – this is the equivalent cost of admission for 1 person
Entries valued @ €40 – deduct €30 credit from the entry fee – this is the equivalent cost of admission for 2 persons
Entries valued @ €60 – deduct €45 credit from the entry fee – this is the equivalent cost of admission for 3 persons
This year, the Tullamore Show horse section will add a number of new eye-catching events to their ever expanding roster of showing and ridden classes.
In our showing category, we will stage our first ever in-hand showing classes for coloured horses, while for Pony Club members we have a working hunter competition exclusively for these stars of the future. The ridden Clydesdale class is a new feature in that category and guaranteed to have a full spectator attendance in their centrally located ring is our Carriage Driving section which not only draws home talent but competitors from the UK as well. Mention of this arena, there will be a Western Style Riding display held during the driving intermission which will add some fun and excitement to proceedings.
As always, the heavily supported classes in the Non-thoroughbred, Irish Draught, Connemara and Ridden Hunter sections provide the backbone to our showing portfolio. The Breeders Challenge for both Non-thoroughbred and Irish Draught feature again with a prize fund totaling €1,500 in each event, while there will be numerous events on offer for all young horse exhibits. An event exclusively for Riding Club members is a new addition in our Working Hunter ring and also making its debut is the RID/AID class in the Ridden Hunter arena.
Another part of our showing agenda that will attract huge interest will be our presentation of local Foxhound, Harrier and Beagle hunting packs. Three years on and the arrival of both the Clydesdales and Miniature Horse & Pony showing classes has proven to be an inspired introduction and one of our greatest success stories in recent years. The combined total of 16 showing classes on offer can only add to their ever increasing popularity.
Dogs
Head of Section Vincent Bermingham Contact No 087-2521402
The Dog programme includes 15 showing and 2 obedience classes. This is a very well supported section, with dog lovers coming from all distances over Ireland to the Show, and this year, we are hoping that it will not be an exception. An exhilarating extra to this programme is the Dog Agility competition, and several displays will take place over the day.
We would like to remind intending competitors that all entries must be sent to the show office by closing day on 25 th July and there will be no entries taken on show day.
Poultry
Head of Section Trevor Chadwick Contact No 087-7589174
There is a new All Ireland Championship in the poultry section this year and this is being sponsored by Connolly Redmills from Goresbridge. The competition is for large fowl, heavy soft feathered females and entries must enter through the qualifying shows.
The poultry section have great expectations for their 41 classes with a big bird display. With classes ranging from the Hard Feathered banton to the Light Soft-Feathered Large fowl, the entries numbers already received are very impressive and this is a must see for every spectator.
The egg producer is not forgotten either as there are 4 classes for eggs.
American Sheep Dog Trials
Head of Section Vincent Keavney Contact No 087 6959784
The collie has always been an essential part of the working sheepdog farmer's life. This dogs courage, intelligence, stamina and obedience has made it an integral part of sheep farming through the ages.
On August 10th at the Tullamore Show, the public have the opportunity to see the working collie in action at the American Style Arena Sheepdog Trials. This is a speed completion, run in an enclosed area, in which the handler has to get his/her dog to drive four sheep around a set obstacle course. Both experienced and young handlers will take part in this exciting competition. In the Open Class, the six fastest to finish qualify for the Grand Final.
The trials begin at 11:30am with a demonstration of training a farm dog given by Eamon Egan, Teagasc Instructor, Co. Roscommon. This year's event has been kindly sponsored by ACC Bank.
Inventions
Head of Section Rodney Cox Contact No 086-8403836
The moment of truth is now almost at hand for Ireland’s inventors in the Farm Inventions and Labour Saving Device classes, in this novel, one of a kind competition. Some exhibitors will actually have a greater interest in the publicity they will receive rather than the prize money. However, not many will refuse the €300 first prize and cup in each of the three categories. In addition, there is also an incentive for students to get involved, as the best student exhibit in each of the three categories will win €100.
While some entries have come in, more are expected and one of the noticeable things in the competition is the rapport and banter between inventors and spectators. They are forever comparing and contrasting their exhibits and swapping ideas, all creating a real buzz about the place.
An officers from the National Patents office in Kilkenny has agreed to come along on the Day and talk to exhibitors about how to go about getting a patent. So a simple labour saving device of today might become an invention of tomorrow!
The whole competition would not exist if it were not for the support given by its three sponsors;
- The Farming Independent
- W.R. Shaw, Rosenallis, Co Laois
- Glenngorey Pumps Ltd, Newbridge, Co Kildare.
Horticulture and Farm Produce

Spotlight on the Spud
2008 has been designated as The International Year of the Potato and an exhibition of 21 old and rare varieties at Tullamore Show is one of a number of events being organised around Ireland to mark the occasion. No doubt some viewers will be able to recognise popular old favourites such as Skerry Champion, Arran Banner, Garden Filler and Shamrock but no guesswork will be required because the name of each variety will be written alongside a plate displaying the tubers. The exhibition will be one of the highlights of the Horticulture and Farm produce Section – and indeed of the 2008 Show as a whole.
Despite the almost complete ‘wash out’ of last year’s Show some of the competitions did go ahead. EasyFood Country Markets held theirs in the Court Hotel and the Bord Bia Potato All Ireland and the Bridge House Tray of Vegetables were re-scheduled for Clonaslee Show.
Everything else had to cancelled but the organisers of the 2008 event are striding forward with undiminished enthusiasm! That certainly applies to the Horticulture and Farm Produce Section and with four All Ireland events on their agenda the committee are all set for another record breaking year.
There will be great interest in the four well-established All Ireland events – Potato, Tray of Vegetables, Single Rose and Garden Club competitions . Now in its 14th year, the Bord Bia Potato All-Ireland continues to attract a large number of entries and is very keenly contested by Ireland’s top growers. The Bridge House Tray of Vegetables event likewise has reached a very high standard and the entries always draw gasps of admiration from spectators. The Rose All-Ireland provides a truly beautiful display – demonstrating just why this particular flower has retained its popularity down through the centuries. There is a valued element of continuity here in that Mrs Bly Hutton-Bury has sponsored this event since the Show started. And then, of course there is the Royal Horticultural Society of Ireland (RHSI) Garden Club of the Year competition, part sponsored by Coillte. Here gardening blends with art to provide a very dramatic feature in the marquee. The All Ireland final of the EasyFood Country Market competition has been transferred to a separate area close to the Cookery Section
The 114 classes in the H. and F.P. Section include 27 fruit and vegetable events and the superb quality of exhibits invariably sets standards that are the envy of thousands of growers. As always, the National Vegetable Society of Ireland have been very supportive and they will have a stand in the marquee to give advice on growing and showing top quality veggies. The Irish Dahlia Society also will be paying their annual visit to give demonstrations and advice to exhibitors. Here, too, the standard is exceptionally high and the dahlias always make a tremendous impact. A novice competition is provided in the dahlia section to encourage newcomers. The exhibits of Cut Flowers and Pot Plants likewise draw o-o-hs and a-a-hs from the viewers while artists with green fingers are guaranteed to provide many feasts for the eye in the ever-popular Floral Art classes. The Childrens Section – embracing floral art and junior tray of vegetable events – is regarded as being especially important because of its role in encouraging young people to take an interest in gardening and to get involved in these standard-raising competitions.
Nowadays, a high proportion of exhibitors in the Horticultural classes may be urban dwellers but the whole Show is very firmly rooted in the land and many farmers avail of the Farm Produce events to display their best products to their peers and to non-farming members of the public.
Another area of the Tullamore marquee which always has a magnetic effect on visitors is the Honey Section, organised by the Offaly Beekeepers Association. Viewers of all ages find it fascinating to watch the busy bees at work in the observation hive – or try to spot Her Majesty the Queen – and they always have many questions to ask the expert beekeepers on the stand.
With Chairman John Donoghue at the helm once again, the Committee and Stewards are putting a tremendous amount of hard work into organisation of their section of the Tullamore Show. The bees must be proud of them! On Show day they spend most of their time buzzing around in the marquee but they also have responsibility for one outdoor event – the Junior All-Ireland loy digging competition. In the same area the senior All Ireland loy diggers will demonstrate the use of the loy for lazy-bed or potato ridge making as in pre-famine times. This event too is for the ‘Year of the Spud’.

Not one, but two steam engines will be in Charleville on Sunday 10 th August. The history and culture associated with these machines is mind-boggling and they have to be seen and appreciated.
The vintage section had been growing steadily since its introduction. Mainly, it is made up of vintage machinery and under the watchful eye of Joe Clancy it is incorporating a greater variety of merchandise and equipment. It is a crowd puller every year and is especially popular with the more mature members of our audience.

Equestrian Activities at Tullamore Show
This year, the Tullamore Show horse section will add a number of new eye-catching events to their ever expanding roster of showing and ridden classes.
Last and by no means least, Showjumping in both horse and pony codes have always been greatly supported over the years and for this year’s show, we in the horse section are in no doubt that we have the best range of competitions tailored for every rider. For horses the €1,000 Winner Takes All class has become our flagship event while in the pony category we have provided 8 classes from newcomer level up ABC standard.
2008 sees the Tullamore Show Society introduce a new entry system where exhibitors in all events, including show jumping, will be allowed credits against their entry fees at the time of making their entry. The old system of providing free passes by post to all showing entrants ahead of the show date has been discontinued. Instead everyone entering the show grounds on Sunday 10 th August must pay at the gate. We have now provided an additional entry form page in our Show Schedule for competitors who wish to partake in our Showjumping classes. Entries for all of the Showjumping competitions will of course be accepted on the day where credit voucher(s) received after payment at the gate can be used at the entries tent. The following is a guide to our new credit entering system;

Date of issue: 30th June 2008 (Word version - click here)
The Tullamore Show and The AIB National Livestock Show is the biggest agricultural show in Ireland and this year is being held on Sunday the 10 th August at Charleville Estate, Tullamore. The event is set to be the biggest on record with a 12% increase in prize money, making it by far the highest amount of prize money for any similar event. 45 National titles will be contested for.
Taoiseach Brian Cowen officially launched the event last week at government buildings and he congratulated the show executive on the phenomenal success of the show to date. This event was followed by the launch of the 2008 Schedule at the Sponsors Corporate Hospitality Evening, which took place in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore and was attended by over 200 guests and supporters. Tom Maher, Chairman of the Show, paid tribute to the support of all the sponsors, traders and exhibitors who continue to back the show. He thanked the main sponsors AIB and also the other 350 sponsors from all over Ireland, including Fáilte Ireland. Their support went a long way to pay off the €500,000 expenses following the cancellation of the show last year. He confirmed that a large number of trade exhibitors have booked their places for this years show, with most of the major machinery companies represented. “This is a wonderful vote of confidence for the show” he said and he also thanked the Taoiseach Mr Brian Cowen for his support. Declan Quinn, Regional Director AIB and Mairead McGuinness MEP also address the very enthusiastic gathering.
The Show continues to develop and expand its programme and is now, without doubt, a truly authentic cultural experience. The theme – The Country Living Showcase – certainly reflects the vastness of the programme, which this year will feature all the regular elements and a number of additional new events. The entertainment programme will include the much-loved Garda Band, who will perform in the pavilion during the show. Bord Bia will have a strong presence and will be specialising in the promotion of the Quality Mark. The Forestry division will have many new features including a full programme for the demonstration area. Our new Sustainable Living division will feature a number of exhibitions and demonstrations centring around energy, heating, alternative fuels for the home and business etc. which is a very topical matter at the moment. The new Home and Garden Enterprise will feature many exhibits to interest the homemakers and garden enthusiasts. The general trade stand area is being expanded to cater for the increase in stand numbers and exhibitors are reminded that the latest date for final receipt of application for Trade Stands is Friday 11 th July.
There will be over 1000 show classes, competing for €160,000 prizefund and the 45 national titles. As well as the livestock, sheep and poultry enterprises there are many new elements of competition in the home industries sections. The young and not so young will find plenty to keep them busy in the fun and games area. The wealthy are also being catered for with a specially designated heliport for those who wish to fly in for the show. Even if you do not as yet own the helicopter, you will be able to experience what ‘flying high’ is like as there will be opportunities to get helicopter rides.
The equestrian section of the show will have all the usual activities in the showing and show jumping areas. Classes for the coloured horses feature for the first time, while the Clydesdale section feature a handling class for 12 to 16 year olds – the winner of which will qualify for the Highland Show in Scotland in 2009. A new change of format this year will be the pre entry facility for show jumping, as prior to this show jumping exhibitors could only enter on the day.

Launch of 2008 Programme at Corporate Hospitality Evening.
The programme for the 2008 Tullamore Show and AIB National Livestock Show, on Sunday 10th August, was unveiled on Wednesday night last, at the Corporate Hospitality Evening, which was held in the Bridge House Hotel, Tullamore, Co Offaly. The event was attended by a very large enthusiastic gathering of the show sponsors, business associates and the organising committee. It was the first major function of the organisation since the disaster they experienced last year, when the show had to be cancelled on the eve of the event. This consequence was a result of torrential flooding of the site, following the highest recorded daily rainfall in the region, for 23 years, but the plans for the 2008 Show promise an event that will obliterate memories of that ‘nightmare’ forever.
Mairead McGuinness, MEP took some time out from the referendum campaign trail and was the guest speaker on the night. During her very well received and very interesting address, she acknowledged that the show subtitle of ‘The Ultimate Country Lifestyle Showcase’ “certainly encompasses all that is true and wonderful about this thriving and progressive event”….. “Yes, it has an agricultural base but there is so much more to see and experience, no matter what your interest, be it home, garden, food science, alternative energy developments, showjumping etc etc. …… My problem, is always that I spend so much time soaking up the unique atmosphere and meeting so many that I do not get to see half of the things which are there.” she remarked.
Declan Quinn, Regional Director with AIB, spoke on behalf of the sponsors and acknowledged that the great cooperation and interaction between the committee and all the various support groups was very evident and plays a big part in the enormous success of the whole event. He also expressed the satisfaction of AIB with their involvement in this very progressive show.
Included in the chairman’s address, which was given by a very positive and enthusiastic Tom Maher, details of the 2008 programme were outlined. The regular features and programme will be included but there will be further development in many areas, in both the competitive and general categories. Some of these highlights include an increased prizefund and new competitions, Performances from the much loved Garda Band, New developments on Sustainable Living, Bord Bia with Quality Mark promotion, Macra na Feirme All Ireland Farm Skills Championship, First visit from Agri Aware, New Home and Garden Section, Artisan Food feature in the Rural Enterprise section, to mention but a few. The sponsors were delighted to hear that there will also be facilities for helicopter landing and parking. For anyone not already in this league, there will be helicopter rides available, throughout the day. The €1000 cash prize for the Best Dressed Lady will certainly be a competition to be keenly contested.
If the buzz and enthusiasm of the corporate evening is anything to judge by, we are certain to be guaranteed a show that just should not be missed on Sunday 10 th August next, on Charleville Estate, Tullamore.
